From the Expert’s Desk
For our Indian neighbors, Sri Lanka offers a tapestry of culture, tourism, education, and sports waiting to be explored. Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage reflects influences from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. UNESCO World Heritage sites like Sigiriya, Kandy, and the Galle Dutch Fort provide glimpses into the different eras of the island’s rich history.
This month, we turn our spotlight on Mr. Chamindra, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Resplendent Ceylon. In our feature, he seamlessly intertwines the unique aspects of Resplendent properties, emphasizing their rich historical significance, vibrant wildlife encounters, and other noteworthy highlights.
History and Culture
The oldest kingdoms in Sri Lanka date back over 2000 years, with interactions between Sri Lankan kingdoms and the Cholan and Pandyan empires. Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka through Ven. Mihindu, son of King Ashoka, while Sangamitta, Ashoka’s daughter, brought a sapling of the Sacred Bo tree, the oldest recorded tree in the world. The mythology in Sri Lanka is intertwined with the Ramayana, with the story of Rama, Sita, and Ravana showcased in various locations across the country. The Ramayana trail exists in the central part of the country, featuring destinations like Ravana Falls and the Sita Fort.
Sports
In terms of sports, cricket takes center stage, with matches at iconic venues like the Galle Fort Cricket Stadium and the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The shared love for cricket is something that bonds the two countries together, and an India-Sri Lanka cricket match in Galle has to be a bucket-list event for any cricket lover, given the beautiful ramparts and the ocean in the background. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy surfing, diving, and hiking along the island’s coastline and interior.
Wildlife
Sri Lanka boasts a diverse and rich wildlife, with iconic species including Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. National parks like Yala, Udawalawe, and Wilpattu offer excellent opportunities to spot these majestic animals in their natural habitats, alongside a variety of birdlife and other fauna. In addition to terrestrial species, Sri Lanka’s coastal areas and wetlands are home to water buffalo, crocodiles, and marine life such as blue whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. With over 400 species of birds, including endemic species like the Sri Lanka Junglefowl, the island is a paradise for birdwatchers. Whether exploring the lush forests, grasslands, or marine environments, visitors can expect unforgettable encounters with Sri Lanka’s fascinating wildlife
Diversity
Tourism in Sri Lanka caters to various interests, from serene beaches to picturesque tea plantations. The three resorts within the Resplendent Ceylon collection feature different regions, including the tea country, wild jungles, and southern coasts. Nature lovers can explore the lush landscapes of Ceylon Tea Trails or enjoy the luxury of Cape Weligama overlooking the Indian Ocean. For a unique safari experience, Wild Coast Tented Lodge offers luxury tents in Yala National Park. The new Reverie collection also showcases two destinations on the South Coast. Ahu Bay, with just 13 rooms and Kayaam House with just 9 rooms are great for milestone celebrations.
For Indian travelers, Sri Lanka promises an enriching experience, blending cultural treasures, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. Whether seeking ancient history or outdoor adventures, Sri Lanka invites you to embark on a truly Resplendent journey of discovery.
